Protecting and Maintaining Pipelines with Subsea Services
Pipelines are valuable to industries around the world. They ensure that oil and gases are transported along the ocean bed and delivered to companies that will then distribute these resources around the world. Simply installing the pipelines is not always sufficient, however. Subsea services might be asked to install another set of pipelines and they need to ensure that the existent pipeline is not damaged in the process.
Preparing For a Crossing
When to pipelines are going to run across each other, measures need to be taken to ensure that the existing pipeline is not damaged. In order to protect the first pipeline, subsea services will usually use a specific measure to lay the second line across the first without putting the first line in jeopardy. These measures will differ according to the results of the surveys and preparations that are conducted by the engineering companies but it is usually the most plausible one that is chosen for the job.
Laying Mattresses across the Pipeline
When an engineering company intends to lay a pipeline across an existing one, they will need to make use of certain measures to ensure that the first line is safe from damage. One of the ways in which this can be done is by laying mattresses over the first line before installing the second one over it. These mattresses are actually concrete bricks that are then connected by cables. Once these have been placed down the second pipeline can be placed on top without damage to the first line.
Trenching is another way that pipelines can be protected while they are on the ocean bed. Certain dangers can render a pipeline useless and they will need to be protected from these. Trawlers can be especially harmful to these pipelines and trenching allows the pipelines a certain amount of protection. Trenching occurs when subsea services lay their lines in a trench on the ocean bed, making it difficult to be accessed and damaged by trawlers or other harmful devices. With the pipeline out of the way, companies do not have to worry about their precious pipelines being damaged and costing them revenue in the process.
Creative Thinking Is the Key
Although there are many ways in which a company can ensure the safety of their pipelines, it is usually creative thinking that allows engineers to solve problems such as these. Companies are always looking for individuals who show these skills because it allows them to come up with more efficient and cost-effect measures of solving problems in the field. These creative skills are used throughout the engineering field and it is this that has assisted many companies in broadening the technologies that are used in this industry.
